Fees:
$25 class clay—25 pounds
(includes bisque and one glaze firing)
$16 class tool kit
$12.50/per hour for Open Lab
(wheels not available during class time)

$70 Non-Student Studio Membership for Open Lab

Leave cards at desk on arrival. Cashier will mark time used on your card.

Clean up—tables, glaze buckets, wheels, must be cleaned after use and all equipment, buckets, sponges, etc., returned to place. No shelves, bats, tools or wareboards provided for non-student members. Do not take Manassas Clay materials and equipment from building.

Pre-registration required for all classes

Students may make up one (1) missed class per session

Refund Policy: 100% of class will be refunded with request prior to first class or if class is canceled.  50% refund prior to second (2nd) class.  No refund after 2nd.

Glaze Kitchen
Glaze Kitchen $12.50/hour plus cost of dry materials
Check in at front desk for a form, printout of your recipe and information. Clean up required or future use of kitchen will be restricted. Use safety precautions—respirator, gloves, no food or drink in kitchen area.

Glazes (Your recipe + our materials = glaze)
We will make your glaze for a per pund cost which includes cost of dry materials, packaging and handling.

Beginning Wheel
An overall introduction to clay for beginners and experienced beginners (over 14 years of age) who wish to work on the potter's wheel. Students will learn methods for centering clay, throwing cylinders and bowls.

Beginning Wheel for Teens
Geared for the younger student. Great chance to learn the basics of the potters wheel in a relaxed, creative atmosphere. Students will learn basic throwing techniques—centering, opening and throwing small bowls and cylinders.

Intermediate Wheel
Concentration on functional forms. Emphasis on skill building, form, decorating and glazing. Students may complete work for the gas kiln for an additional firing fee.

Advanced Wheel
Focus on development of an individual style through demonstrations and informal critiques. Special emphasis on decorating techniques. May complete work for gas, raku, and wood-salt kiln for an additional firing fee.

Fused Glass Classes at Manassas Clay

In our Fall Series we will discuss and demonstrate glass cutting techniques, both straight and circular, firing schedules, glass compatibility, color and design, fusing, slumping and coldworking (the mechanical grinding, shaping, and finishing of glass). These skills will be put to use throughout our workshops and happy hours as you design you own fused glass jewelry or holiday ornaments.

Introduction to dichroic fused glass jewelry

::Desktop:glass:CIMG3934.jpgYou will create dichroic fused glass jewelry as we explore fused glass tools and methods. This workshop will cover types of glass, tools, cutting techniques, firing schedules, design and finishing work.  You will cut, assemble and fuse pendants and/or earrings.  You will learn safe kiln operation and you will fire your own jewelry pieces and leave class with ready-to-wear dichroic jewelry.

Class fee: $60 (includes use of all tools, safety tools and kilns);

Additional fee for glass & findings. You are welcome to bring your COE 90 compatible glass from previous glass classes to use in this workshop.

Minimum 4, maximum 6 students

Happy hour sessions will begin as we open of a bottle of wine chosen by the instructor to accompany the fused glass jewelry project for the evening.  Each session will include instruction of a specific technique followed by studio time with the instructor to work on the fused glass project of the evening.

No previous experience necessary.

Happy Hour fee: $35 (includes wine, project glass for project, use of all tools, and kiln firing)

Additional fee for findings for jewelry projects.

Your work will be fired and will be ready to pick up the following week.

Fused glass plates and bowls

In this three-part workshop you will learn the fundamentals of kiln-formed glass to design your own fused glass plates and bowls. We will discuss and demonstrate glass cutting techniques, both straight and circular, firing schedules, glass compatibility, color and design, fusing, slumping and coldworking (the mechanical grinding, shaping, and finishing of glass). These skills will be put to use throughout our workshop as you design your own fused plates and bowls.  You will leave this workshop with your own 8” fused glass plate or 8” round fused glass bowl and all the skills and knowledge to continue working in glass independently.  Your plate or bowl will be fused and slump fired and will be available to pick up approximately 1 week after the completion of this workshop.

In this class you will design, cut and assemble up to four fused glass photo holders.  These are wonderful gifts for anyone.  Imagine this handsome photo holder on a desk paired up with a fun photo. The photo holders will be fuse and slump fired for you in two separate firings.  You will pick up your work approximately one week after the workshop. 

Workshop fee;  $50, includes all tools and firings.  Additional fee for glass.

Powder Wafers

Instructor: Amber Kendrick

Powdered glass frit adds depth and design to all your fused glass art.  In this workshop you will use a color palette of powdered glass and stencils to layer effects and design elements into powder wafers.  You are encouraged to bring any stencils you like, and a selection will also be available.  You will make two separate powder wafers and fire them.  After they finish firing, you will place them on two layers of sheet glass to be fired into a coaster or trivet.  These will be fired for you and ready for pickup during the following week.

Wall Pocket Vase

Instructor;  Sarah Weaver

These beautiful vases hang on the wall or in a sunny window and hold water for those fresh springs you are bringing this Spring.  In this workshop, we will design, cut and assemble all the pieces, with or without a fused in hanger, for tack and slump firing   We’ll discuss how to bead a handle to hang it up.  Both firings will be completed within a week after the workshop and you may pick up the base ready to add the hanging loop.  This workshop is appropriate for parent/older child teams to work and play together.


Workshop fee;  $50, includes all tools and firings.  Additional fee for glass.
 


Open Studio for Glass

Need space to work or a fun place to play? If so, Open Studio is for you! The studio is open during Manassas Clay business hours exclusively to glass class students. No guests are allowed. Students may use studio tools and equipment, and fire your own smaller pieces in the EvenHeat filns, or we’ll fire your larger pieces for you. Bring your own supplies or purchase them here, it’s up to you! Studio fees are hourly, and include the use of the EvenHeat kilns.  The floor kiln is in addition to hourly rates.

Price: $12.50 per hour, OR buy a discounted 10 hour studio card at the front desk.  Studio time includes the use of tools and EvenHeat Kilns.  Firing ONLY in the floor kiln;  $12.50 or one studio hour from your studio card.  Contact us at throwntogetherarts@comcast.net, tell us whether you want a full fuse, tack fuse or slump fire, and we will take care of getting your work through the kiln for you.

Instructor Bio’s:

Amber Kendrick is an architect and designer who recently relocated from San Francisco to northern Virginia. She applies her understanding of materials, color, design and form to warm glass for both functional and architectural applications. She works in warm glass at her studio in Manassas. Amber is owner and artist of Cloud Terre, LLC.

Sarah Weaver is is a former graphic designer as well as a local artist with mixed-media experience who graduated with an Art Degree from Sweet Briar College. Currently she teaches art at Osbourn High School in the Manassas City Public Schools. She has taught many successful classes at Manassas Clay.

Twila Johnson has worked in warm glass for 4 years in both jewelry and functional forms. With over 15 years of experience as a potter, her interest is in combining clay and glass in mixed-media functional forms. She works in her pottery and glass studio in Manassas. Twila is owner and artist of Thrown Together Arts, LLC.
